Nature of happiness
OK, OK, this is why

1) The cast. Josh Gad is insanely good:  a lumbering oaf with the best of intentions but the worst of ideas, his first act closer raised the roof.  Paired with Ken-doll lookalike Andrew Rannells, the effect is delicious - a man so plastic perfect, he’s barely human, but brimful of preppy charm. Rory O’Malley as head mormon is just superb.

2) The subject matter.  They had the audience clapping along to songs about amphibian rape and female circumcision.

3) The parodying of other shows.  Lion King gets it in the balls.

4) The way it’s both pretty obscene but lovingly faithful to traditional musicals.  When it’s time for the lovers to reveal their feelings, we get a song using Baptism as a metaphor for first-time sex.

5) The lyrics are razor sharp.  Nikki M James’ solo about wanting to get to ‘Salt-a-lake-a-city’ was both touching and ridiculous.

6) It can be brutally cutting, but underneath it all, it has heart.  I defy anyone not to have more affection for Mormon ways when the curtain comes down.
